Thornton P. Knowles On Self Esteem

I grew up in the era before the self esteem movement. When I was 11, as my father and another adult were discussing something, I injected my opinion into the conversation. Later, my dad took me aside and said this to me: "Son, by definition, you are retarded. You have the mind of an 11-year-old." Like I say, I grew up before the self esteem movement.

  1. A little self esteem might have helped you be a more likable human.

  2. I don't know if you are referring to me or Mr. Knowles. But I do know a lot of extremely likable people who grew up without what today is, in my opinion, unearned self esteem that is borderline pathological.

  3. I was referring to Thornton P. Knowles. And he is writing about how unhappy he is all the time. And how he rejects himself a lot. To each his own.
