With the advent of DNA analysis, the identification of impression evidence is no longer cutting-edge forensic science. Many in the criminal justice system believe that the identification of crime scene impressions made by fingers, teeth, foot ware, and tires through comparison with known samples is a process too subjective and prone to human error to even be classified as science. Some of these critics think if forensic science evolves as it should, the day will come when impression identification, particularly in the bite-mark, shoe impression, and tire-track fields, will be replaced by more scientific and reliable identification techniques.
