The Execution of Lezmond Mitchell

Lezmond Mitchell, a Native American, was the fourth federal prisoner to die from lethal injection in 2020. Mitchell had been convicted of murdering a woman and her 9-year-old granddaughter in 2001. The U.S. Supreme Court denied Mitchell's petition to stop his execution. The Navajo Nation opposed the execution on grounds it violated the Native American tribe's sovereignty. On Indian reservations, however, all felony crimes are federal offenses.
