I grew up in the era before the self esteem movement. When I was 11, as my father and another adult were discussing something, I injected my opinion into the conversation. Later, my dad took me aside and said this to me: "Son, by definition, you are retarded. You have the mind of an 11-year-old." Like I say, I grew up before the self esteem movement.

A little self esteem might have helped you be a more likable human.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you are referring to me or Mr. Knowles. But I do know a lot of extremely likable people who grew up without what today is, in my opinion, unearned self esteem that is borderline pathological.
ReplyDeleteI was referring to Thornton P. Knowles. And he is writing about how unhappy he is all the time. And how he rejects himself a lot. To each his own.
