Hair is one of the most common items used to get DNA. To get a good sample to use, the crime scene investigator needs the root. The root most often comes out at a crime scene during a struggle when hair is pulled out. Crime scene investigators who have to collect a sample of hair from a rape suspect often choose the pubic area to pull from.
